Orthodontic treatment is a great way to straighten teeth, improve the bite and jaw alignment, and boost confidence and self-esteem in children. During the years that a child grows, orthodontic treatment can prevent issues that can affect the proper alignment of the entire mouth in the future.
As a parent himself, Dr. Tottori understands the concerns we all have about finding the best care for our children. That is one of the many reasons Dr. Tottori uses state-of-the-art diagnostic processes to determine best treatment options and timing for all of his patients. And with over 30 years of experience, you can be assured that your child’s smile is in the best hands.
Why Do Kids and Teens Need Braces?
Braces and orthodontic appliances can solve a number of oral health issues including:
- Overly crowded and crooked teeth
- Spaces between teeth
- Overbite (upper teeth bite over the lower teeth excessively)
- Open bite (some teeth cannot properly touch each other)
- Underbite (lower teeth stick out ahead of the upper teeth)
- Crossbite (upper teeth are inside of the lower teeth)
Benefits of correcting these issues include:
- Aligned teeth are easier to clean, resulting in less cavities and gum disease.
- Aligned bites function better making eating easier, protecting teeth from chipping/breaking and reducing stress on the jaw joint (TMJ)
- Perfect smiles increase confidence and smiling.
Your child could have one or more of these issues that are best addressed when they are young and growing. Some issues, like underbites, can be corrected at an early age but are not treatable with only orthodontic treatment as an adult. Dr. Tottori recommends coming in for a complimentary consultation when your child is 8 years old to better assess possible treatment for the future to provide the best result.
The Difference Between Traditional, Lingual (Invisible Braces) and Clear Aligners.
Traditional braces are the most common option, consisting of a series of metal or ceramic brackets bonded to your teeth and a series of wires that connect the brackets to each other. While traditional braces are the most visible, they're not the only option. Lingual braces, for instance, are placed on the inside of your teeth and are almost invisible. A clear aligner is a transparent removable plastic tray system used as orthodontic devices. The trays adapt precisely to your dental alignment and gradually move your teeth to an ideal arch shape, bite alignment and beautiful smile.
